Year odometer readings

The CRA asks for your odometer reading at the start and end of each tax year. This gives total km driven and your business-use percentage.

Trips are stored on this phone only. Export a CSV regularly as a backup. You can restore from an exported CSV here.

How to use Mileage Tracker

1. First-time setup
  1. Open the Setup tab.
  2. Under Year odometer readings, enter your odometer at the start of the year (Jan 1, or the day you start using the app) and tap Save readings.
  3. Under Saved places, add the places you drive to often (e.g. Office, Supplier, Bank).
2. Install on your phone
  • iPhone: open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android: open the site in Chrome, tap the menu, then Install app or Add to Home screen.

It then opens like a regular app and works without signal.

3. Log a trip
  1. On the Log trip tab, check the date (it defaults to today).
  2. Start odometer fills in from your last trip. Change it if needed.
  3. Enter the End odometer. The distance shows below.
  4. Tap a saved place, or type a Destination.
  5. Enter the Business purpose (e.g. "Client meeting"). Purposes you used before are suggested as you type.
  6. Tap Save trip.

Personal driving: don't log it. Before your next business trip, change the start odometer to your car's current reading.

4. View, edit or delete trips
  • The Trips tab lists trips for the selected year with monthly totals.
  • The top boxes show Business km, Total km driven and Business use % (needs both year odometer readings).
  • Tap Edit to fix a trip, or Delete to remove it.
5. End of year
  1. On Dec 31 (or your last day of the tax year), go to Setup and enter the Odometer at end of year.
  2. Enter the next year's start reading too, so the new year is ready.
  3. On the Trips tab, pick the year and tap Export CSV. Send this file to your accountant.
6. Export and back up
  • Export CSV on the Trips tab downloads a spreadsheet (opens in Excel or Google Sheets) with every trip plus a yearly summary.
  • Your data is stored only on this phone. Export a CSV regularly (e.g. monthly) and save it to email, iCloud or Google Drive.
  • New phone or lost data? Go to Setup, tap Restore from CSV and pick your latest export. Trips already saved are skipped.
7. CRA record keeping
  • For each business trip, the CRA expects the date, destination, purpose and km driven. The app requires all of these.
  • Keep odometer readings for the start and end of each year.
  • Keep your vehicle expense receipts (gas, insurance, repairs) separately.
  • Check with your accountant on what applies to your business.
